The nation is turning ganja green.

As of now, Alaska, California, Colorado, Maine, Massachusetts, Nevada, and Oregon are all part of the growing list of states leading the legalization campaign. But Illinois may also be getting in on the fun, and you have two Democrats (of course) to thank for paving the groundwork to make it happen.

In Illinois, Senator Heather Steans and Representative Kelly Cassidy are putting in the work to get things rolling by introducing a bill to legalize marijuana (Senate Bill 316 and House Bill 2353). The bill will let adults 21 and over to possess up to 28 grams of grass and would tax marijuana in the same fashion as alcohol. If Illinois needs any motivation to pass it, all they have to do is examine the footsteps of Colorado, which is ground zero for legal recreational marijuana. As the state has learned, there are more benefits than one to legalizing cannabis—it will hope lower crime rates, spark revenue, create jobs, and provide easier access to medical marijuana to those who need it the most.

To find out more about Steans and Cassidy’s plans to convince the state’s lawmakers to legalize pot, check out the video above. And keep in mind, your state can reap many of these same advantages if they joined the movement.

  1. I can’t wait for Georgia to legalize mj!!!! Our jails and detention centers are overflowing with mostly black men charged with distribution or some other bs mj charge. It’s ridiculous and racially motivated in mhp. LEGALIZE TODAY!!!!!!

  2. Lord knows IL budget needs all the help it can get. Saving on expenditures and increasing revenue is a good thing.

  3. Why, cause people travel thousands of miles to Colorado. Illinois is in the best place to harness that income, shutting the door on western trips.

  4. if illinois legalizes it this year, theyll reap the entire midwest in pot sales, essentially eliminating our debt in 1-2 years. as well as decreasing crime and incarserations. its a no fucking brainer

  5. By sooner, do you mean possibly legalizing it this year? Or just next year rather than 2 or more years later since the deadline to pass it (the end of the legislative session) is May 31st? ‘Cause I sure hope it is this year.

  6. Is Arizona going to try and legalize recreational marijuana again very disappointed it did not pass the first time.

  7. Illinois can make so much money off of this. Not to mention the hemp market of textiles, clothing, and combustible fuel

  8. When will this reefer madness BS end. Get it out of the hands of the scum bags who are selling it now. Who knows what shit they add to it or what chemicals are used to fertilize it. Sometimes it don’t even smell like weed. Regulate it, tax it, grow it in properly.

  9. Sometimes I feel the people that run Illinois doesn’t want it to happen.. fucking hell. For fuck sake legalize it already.

  10. even if weed is legal, all it takes is a drug test to kiss your job goodbye. meanwhile the government collects all the money from sales.

  11. Mine said 33

  12. I really hope they do legalize marijuana here in Illinois.I have a seizure disorder and until I started smoking every day,I was falling out having up to 20 seizures a day. Having said that I live in a small hick town with doctors who won’t prescribe mmj. The prescription medication for seizures they did offer made me sick and lose weight. Not to mention I felt like a zombie..Only thing that saved me was marijuana..It gave me a life worth living. So unfortunately I have to go about getting my medicine without the help of these small town doctors. Most doctors are too afraid to lose their license here in Illinois, rather than help their patients. Please let Illinous be next to legalize..My ass literally depends on it..

  13. It makes sense that we legalize it, I have no idea why it’s taking them so damn long. It’s hella annoying, and to use the excuse that ” Oh, there will be more stoner reckless drivers.” Okay, if that is your argument, then let’s make alcohol illegal again since we all know there are reckless drunk drivers, that HAVE killed thousands of people. It’s a b.s. , excuse keeping the private system running. We are in hella debt with a shitty ass corrupt governor who does not care about its citizens, so until I hear we are getting closer to legalization; I am not holding my breath.

  14. If we legalized in all 50 states ?..400,000,000.00 X50=20,000,000,000.00 a year !..Strait to the debt !…on top of the regular payment?..Strait to principle!.

  15. At best it will be early 2018, realistically it will be late 2018, or possibly voted on in 2018 and wont take effect until certain date…and the governor could veto it. He did order the medical program frozen and not further expanded.

  16. LEGALIZE POT IN ILLINOIS IT WILL BRING CRIME DOWN 80% STATE WILL PROFIT 300 MILLIONS OF DOLLERS AND PEAPLE WILL BE MORE HAPPY.

  17. Ask your state senator. Mine is Scott Drury. He said it is “complicated”. How is it complicated to insert the word “not” into “it is illegal for adults to knowingly possess cannabis.”?

  18. WHEN? When do legislators meet again to vote on this? Once they do vote and it’s legal, may we pleasantly proceed to our garages, smoke up, and go for a walk or listen to music? Or, do we need 10 years of “let’s work this out” first? Gee, I feel like a child.

  19. New thread: What did your state senator say when you asked him/her why is it illegal and when will they vote?

  20. Where are my recreational smokers at? 😎 Who’s hitting up Hempcon’s Halloweed 2017 in San Francisco this Halloween weekend? TICKETS AVAILABLE HERE:

  21. Illinois we are in so much fucking debt and this could help also help so many other issues and why is it still illegal?

  22. It will make Illinois a shit ton of money if they make weed legal besides it does not cause any danger besides there’s more worse substances like alcohol, heroin, cocaine, etc
